Sexual freedom: is Masturbation a Feminist Act to learn in school?

Sexual freedom is discussed in interviews with Wendy Sanford and Judy Norsigian, authors of the revolutionary women’s health book “Our Bodies, Ourselves”, and Betty Dodson, “The Mother of Masturbation.”  In the documentary “Sticky! A (Self) Love Story” about Masturbation, Sexual freedom is analysed together with Larry Flint, Nina Hartley. It tackles the stigma around masturbation, female sexual pleasure.

The women all discuss the role that masturbation and clitoral orgasms had in the women’s liberation movement of the 1960s and 1970s.

Says, Norsigian, masturbation was not only about pleasure, but power. It meant that women were able to independently access an experience that had previously been denied to them.

It was about:

“encouraging women to be their own human beings.” – Judy Norsigian

Betty Dodson earned the nickname “The Mother of Masturbation” after she became one of the first women to openly talk about the joys of self-pleasure. In the 60s and 70s, she hosted lectures and classes for groups of women, teaching them how to masturbate.

Dodson tells that when women approach her:

“It’s not thank you for teaching me to masturbate. It’s thank you for liberating me.”

Unfortunately the path to sexual freedom and free masturbation talks isn’t always sun & shine.

The First Black Woman U.S. Surgeon General Was Fired For Suggesting Students Learn About Masturbation

One of the most disgraceful incidents within our government took place in 1994, when Dr. Joycelyn Elders — the nation’s first black woman Surgeon General — was forced to resign after merely supporting one idea; children should learn about masturbation in school as a way to prevent unplanned pregnancies and the spread of STDs.

Dr. Elders expressed agreement with the proposed initiative at the UN World AIDS Day conference that year, and her statement was met with Puritanical backlash and panic. Elders refused to change her position on the matter, so President Bill Clinton made her vacate her position, or fired her. Dr. Elders is interviewed in the documentary, and like the badass queen she is, still refuses to change her mind.

She says:

“I was not the President’s Surgeon General. I was not the Congress’s Surgeon General. I was the people’s Surgeon General, and I was going to do what I felt was the right thing to do for the most people.”

In one interview, Kathy Dennis, author of Art/Porn, says the injustice faced by Dr. Joycelyn Elders represents the devastating fact that we can’t have a public discourse about sexual education in USA. This incident may have happened in 1994, but things are no better 22 years later.

The lack of sexual freedom and free masturbation talk was a struggle for Tana, the director of the documentary “Sticky! A (Self) Love Story”, too.

He had plenty of difficulties to even get educators to speak on camera.

He told to the Bustle website:

“I was surprised at how many educators and teachers would not speak to me because they were afraid of losing their jobs. One of the teachers we did get is my cousin; I had to go to family to get someone to help me.”

People Need To Relax About both about sexual freedom and Masturbation.

We advise all our readers to watch the documentary “Sticky! A (Self) Love Story”. Several actors, sexologists, and sex educators as they mourn the loss of the beloved Pee-Wee over something as simple as masturbating in a porn theater Thank goodness that Reubens has been having a sort of career renaissance.
